Project in collaboration with Elena Poma

The brief: design a set of three espresso mugs to express the concepts of memory and legacy.

This project was a struggle as neither of us considered ourselves 'illustrators' in the traditional sense of the word. We didn't feel we had the skills to hand draw a design, and we stumbled with different ideas which, though conceptually sound, were not the most aesthetically pleasing.

We then focused more on the concept of legacy as identity, how our past shapes us as people, and simplified our design to two defined elements.

The tree, building from the roots up to the branches, shows personal growth and the influence of the past. The fingerprint is a universal symbol of personal identity, specific to each person, yet still influenced by our genetics and ancestry.
